Passivation of lead

As recommended by the World Health Organization, the European Union has adopted a regulation establishing the quality limit of lead in tap water at 25 micrograms per litre. In 2013, this quality limit will be lowered to 10 micrograms per litre.

The lead in water intended for human consumption comes from corrosion of old pipes in certain buildings and lead connections.

Pending replacement of all these lead elements, Feralco proposes a solution to limit corrosion and comply with maximum limits of lead: the implementation of orthophosphates.

The principle is based on forming a protective film on the lead elements, where the orthophosphates together with lead form solids with solubility less than that of the compounds formed with carbonates, and thus limits the amount of leached lead.
